What is the CSDA/CCAD?The Canadian Society of Decorative Arts/ Cercle canadien des arts décoratifs is a national non-profit charitable organization dedicated to the decorative arts and design in Canada. How often is the print magazine published?Ornamentum is published twice a year. Our Spring/Summer issue is published in May and our Fall/Winter issue is published in November.

What types of design does the magazine include?Ornamentum celebrates material culture in all its forms and expressions. The magazine explores a wide range of decorative arts and design, from furniture and furnishings, ceramics, glass, metalwork, graphics, and textiles through to aspects of architecture, industrial, interior and landscape design, craft, and the aesthetics of the everyday.

How can I pitch an article for the print magazine?Please email any pitches to the editor at editorial@ornamentum.ca. Pitches should be no more than 300 words. We do not accept fully drafted articles. To get a sense of the work we publish and types of decorative arts we feature, we suggest reading some of our recent articles. Note that our editorial team is very small and cannot guarantee a response, but we will try to get back to you as soon as we can. Upcoming themes: Spring/Summer 2025 – The Craft of Craft. Open to pitches. The Craft of Craft will highlight artisanship as an aspect of Canadian history; craft skill; and individual, group, and regional identity. Writers may profile an artisan or business, object or object type, studio or atelier, program or school; explore a traditional craft occupation in Canada such as woodworking, metal smithing, masonry, or tailoring; explain the history and context for a regional or folk craft; and more. Pitch deadline: January 17, 2025 Draft deadline: March 7, 2025 Publication date: May 5, 2025 Fall/Winter 2025 – Signs & Symbols. Open to pitches. Signs & Symbols will explore the history and significance of graphic design and surface pattern and its meaning on decorative objects. Writers may consider topics such as Canadian emblems, coded or cultural messages in textiles, the language of flowers on teacups and more. Pitch deadline: July 11, 2025 Draft deadline: September 5, 2025 Publication date: November 3, 2025

What are your submission guidelines?We publish in French and English. Articles are published in the language in which they are written. Authors must also supply print-quality images, with the rights to publish in print and online.

I am an artist or designer. How can I have my work featured on the site?We are always looking to highlight artists and designers working in the areas of furniture and furnishings, ceramics, glass, metalwork, graphics, textiles, interior design, aspects of architecture, industrial and landscape design. If you'd like to fill out our Artist Profile questionnaire, or if you'd like to suggest an artist or designer for a possible profile, please contact our online editor at online@ornamentum.ca. In your email, include a short bio (no more than 200 words) and a link to the work.

Do you pay your writers?Ornamentum pays a small honorarium to writers. Rates for our print issues are as follows: Lead articles 1500-2000 words $250.00 Feature articles 1000-1800 words $200.00 Reviews/Profiles(books/exhibitions) 750-1000 words $150.00 For articles published online only, writer fees are as follows: Articles under 1000 words $100.00 Articles between 1000-1200 words $150.00

How can I subscribe to the magazine?Visit our Store page to purchase a subscription.

When will I receive my first copy?New subscribers will be mailed their first issue of the magazine within one month of purchase. Following issues of the magazine are sent out in May and November.

Can I subscribe to the magazine if I live outside of Canada?Both U.S. and international subscriptions are available.
